I've seen a bunch of news stories over the weekend where PETA is saying they are opposed to zoos enriching the lives of their animals. I thought PETA cared about animals - if that is the case why would they be opposed to zoos doing what they can to make their lives better? I have to say that I am really beginning to wonder about them. You know you see all the great work zoos are doing (panda babies, endangered species back in the wild) and all you see from PETA is a lot of controversy over what over the top campaign they have going today.
It seems to me that PETA spends a lot of time trying to get attention for themselves without really doing the hard work that it takes to do something really good in this world.
In other news - I have yet another baby panda to watch. There was one born at the San Diego Zoo too. How cute!!!

Baby panda doing well
The baby panda at the National Zoo is just about a week old and doing well. He is starting to get black and white markings and (from what I can see) looks more like a newborn puppy (he looked kind of like a baby rat last week). More than a week is a milestone for the National Zoo because their previous female panda had health issues that compromised the successful rearing of her infants (or their health, I'm not quite clear on this). One thing that really impresses me is the announcement that National Zoo is stopping construction work to ensure that the mom and baby are not startled by any loud noise.
I know the San Diego Zoo did this as well and it just shows you that zoos care about their animals more than construction projects.

Baby panda born!!
It's so wonderful that a baby panda has been born at the National Zoo. I'm so glad that they have finally had a success, they are a good zoo and they have gotten hammered far too much in the press. (Come on guys! What do you expect when Federal funding keeps getting cut? At least they have the most caring animal people working there).
I have been trying to get a glimpse of the baby panda on their web cam but I haven't seen anything so far. How cool is that to be able to watch the baby this way.
